Back to School, Milestones and New Beginnings

I love school supplies. Like, I’m not joking when I say that I NEED highlighters. And Sharpies. And Pilot G2 pens. And scissors. And binders full of fresh paper just waiting for brilliance. Ok, maybe I don’t need them. I’ve got plenty. But I do LOVE this time of year where we go to Walmart or Staples shopping for the new things to use this new school year, to start a fresh, new chapter of 2018. August marks the beginning not only of a new school year, but for some of us, a new school year of ministry fun, discipleship opportunities, servant leader experiences and moments to capture. Here’s just a snapshot of what’s to come:

First of all, August 8, 6:30-8:00 p.m., we will be having some COLOR WARS. Wear clothes that can get wet and colorful! What’s more fun than throwing handfuls of colored paint powder at your friends? Water balloons will be making appearance, as will root beer floats! All 6th-12th grade students need to be there!

High School Student Ministry: every Wednesday night from 6:30-8:30 p.m. starting August 15, we worship Jesus led by our awesome youth band, hang out and play together (spoons, anyone?), dive into God’s Word, pray for one another, and get an opportunity to simply rest from the busy, the drama, the chaos of high school. This year, we are studying topics like World Religions and Cults, How to Share our Faith, Are Hell & Demons Real, and End Times. If are in high school or know of a high school student, encourage them to join us! We also do quarterly and spontaneous fun stuff off campus and go to each other’s games and performances. Check out this website for National LCMS Youth Gathering info too!

Jr High JAM (Confirmation): 7th-8th grade students also meet every Wednesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. starting August 15. Parents join too! Together, with other students and parents, we explore the riches of the Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism, this year focusing on the awesome law and gospel in the 10 Commandments. Students enjoy small groups and games with their friends, while parents learn how to develop and disciple strong Christian teenagers and grow in faith and knowledge of Jesus. Quarterly, Jr High students have a fun night off campus! Click here to sign up!

For children, we have some AWESOME milestone celebrations coming up on Sunday, August 26:

  • Young Reader’s Bible: It’s tradition here at CGLCS that all 3rd graders receive a Bible for use in their classrooms and homes. So, all parents and 3rd grade students are invited to a special Faith at Home Workshop on Sunday, August 12 at 9:00 a.m. in the school theatre. This 45 minute workshop will go over some awesome resources in your new Bibles, the power of reading God’s Word every day, and some ideas on how to lead devotions as a family. You don’t want to miss this! Then on August 26th, all 3rd graders and parents are encouraged to be at the 9am contemporary worship service for a special Milestone Celebration together with the family of God, as we pass on the faith to these young disciples of the Word. Click here to sign up! If you have a 3rd grader who needs a Bible, please contact me!
  • Backpack Blessing: In all worship services, children are encouraged to bring their backpacks to worship for a special blessing on the new school year during the children’s message!
  • Rite of Beginnings for Confirmation: All beginning Confirmation students and families are encouraged to join us in worship for a special moment celebrating the beginning of the 2-year Confirmation Milestone.

We are hoping to launch our next year of Agape Kids for preschool age through 6th grade students on Sunday, August 19. If you’ve ever wanted to get plugged in to serve the next generation of Jesus-followers, now’s the time! We need a full staff to launch on August 19 and we still need a few teachers to serve any amount of time to point the youngest to Jesus! Click here to register your child for Agape Kids Sunday School!

As a DCE, in my 12 year career, I’ve never gotten sick of new beginnings and new school years. There’s just something powerful about the idea of a fresh start, a clean slate. A chance to be different than you were before, do your best, make wise choices, live bravely, give abundantly, love relentlessly, lead intentionally and serve joyfully.

Never forget that we are all students, learning new things every day. May we never lose our hunger to learn and grow. May Jesus bless us, guide us and walk beside each of us as we embrace the adventure of this new beginning.
