A Time of Sabbath Rest
“When we choose to have a Sabbath heart about our activities and possessions, we’re doing more than just keeping ourselves from living a stress-filled, clutter-laden life. We are also honoring God’s purpose by setting aside space and time to foster holy intimacy. The break we take from the regular pattern of our lives in any area gives us occasion to see Yahweh clearly without distraction and distortion.”
~ Priscilla Shirer’s “Breathe” Bible Study/Video Teaching
About a year ago, a group of “GiG” ladies were reflecting on the uplifting experience we’d had at our half day, on-campus, “Pour, Soak, Grow” women’s retreat. It was great. However, at that time, we were led to dream a little bigger. We dreamed of more time away from our routine surroundings, and even more time to learn and grow with each other.
With the help of 11 gals on our planning team, God allowed this dream to become a reality at this year’s GiG Summer Retreat. On the grounds of the serene Scottsdale Plaza Resort, 90+ women said “Yes and Amen” to a full day together on a beautiful Saturday in mid-July
Some may say we were a noisy group. Laughing, crying, consoling, encouraging, sympathizing, and praising could be heard at any given moment in that ballroom. Sometimes all at once! It was the sound of the different generations of our church. It was the sound of women strengthening their relationship with each other and with their Lord. It was the sound of the Holy Spirit, working in the hearts of all who attended and even some of those who served us from the hotel. What a glorious noise!
“Rest” was the theme of the day with large group, small group, and personal reflection activities which focused us on learning to “Breathe” by making room for Sabbath in our lives. So often we let the noise of our busy lives control our time. We start to feel like we have no time to just be at rest. Sometimes we think that we need to be in control, being the master juggler, instead of resting in the arms of our Lord and Savior. We feel like we have no breathing room. With Scriptural encouragement, we learned how important it is to carve out time and space to breathe in the goodness of God's grace. In taking that time, we silence the noise of the outside world in order to hear God's calling and assurance that He is in control and is working things for our good!
We are humbled by, and are so grateful for God’s orchestration of this retreat day which lead some attendees to say … ”I left with so much to think and pray about, and I’m thankful for new friendships made.” ... “Amazing event! Filled up my tank.” … “Blessed to be part of this day! The testimony will stick with me, thank you for sharing!” … “An amazing and inspiring event” … “it was fun learning what a hashtag is” … “Thank you for the deepening of friendships and sharing the love we have for Jesus.”
If you happen to talk to someone who attended the retreat, ask them to tell you more about...
a) living in God’s “double portion” provision
b) the idea that “enough is enough” with a “14min /14in Challenge”
c) these 3 Sabbath Principles …
- Resist the urge to continue
- Remember what you used to be
- Recall what God has accomplished on your behalf
Psalm 46:10 - “Be still and know that I am God”
